Launch of the EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» project in Romania in a week of HELP related events

Strasbourg 18 October 2018

The HELP course on Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights launched for Masters’ students in Timisoara, followed by a HELP training of trainers session hosted at the National Institute of Magistracy and the launch of the course on Fight against Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Transphobia for Romanian lawyers, hosted at the Romanian Institute for the Training of Lawyers in Bucharest

On 9 October the students in the Masters’ Programme on European Law from the Law Faculty of the West University of Timisoara were introduced to the EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» Project and enrolled in the HELP course on Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. They will complete this course in the framework of their curriculum course on human rights law. This initiative builds on a fruitful cooperation between the University and the Council of Europe HELP Programme materialised in the integration of HELP courses in the students’ curricula.

On 10 and 11 October 2018, the National Institute of Magistracy (NIM) in Bucharest hosted an EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» training-of-trainers session for enlarging the pool of certified trainers in view of launching HELP courses in the future. Seven regular trainers from the NIM and 3 trainers from the National Institute for the Training of Lawyers took part in the two-day session and were introduced to the HELP methodology and walked through the main stages of using our online platform for tutoring HELP courses. The session was included in the series of events related to the EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» project. The participants who will successfully complete their assignments will receive the HELP tutor certificate and will be included in the pool of HELP certified tutors.

On 12 October, a group of 25 Romanian lawyers gathered for the first launch of the HELP course on Fight against Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Transphobia in Romanian. The seminar was organised by the EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» project and was hosted by the National Institute for the Training of Lawyers in Bucharest. The Seminar was opened by Traian Briciu, Director of the Institute. It was continued with sessions highlighting the relevant European standards and their application in the national context, as well with exchanges on the synergies between the Council of Europe and the EU framework and their implications in the daily practice of lawyers. The participants got familiarised with the HELP Programme and the EU/Council of Europe «HELP in the EU» Project, as well as the Council of Europe e-learning platform containing more than 30 online courses on human rights; they also met the national tutor who will accompany them in the implementation of the course for the following three months.

Many of the participants have also completed in the past the HELP course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights, launched for two series of lawyers in 2017; following the positive experience they had and the utility they found in the course, the possibility to be part of the group enrolled in the HELP course on Fight against Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Transphobia was more than welcome. They also expressed the wish to have more courses launched in Romania in the future.

The participants who successfully complete this course will receive HELP certificates issued in cooperation with the national training institution”.
